Axe & Paddle Bushcraft began back in 2012, when husband and wife team Steven and Kirsty Le Say hosted a Spoon Carving Workshop in a friend’s garden.  www.axeandpaddlebushcraft.co.uk

In the three years since, we’ve opened up our own seaside workshop just outside of Brighton, where we host a number of courses, teaching traditional skills and crafts.  Steve also hand makes a range of premium quality lifestyle and traditional adventure gear, which he thoroughly enjoys putting through its paces!

We’ve had a very active presence at festivals throughout the summer months and we’re regularly booked for private events, such as birthdays, hen and stag weekends and corporate getaways.

Together, and with the support of our great team, we teach around 1,000 people a year to make something with their hands – it’s such a simple, yet enriching and rewarding thing and we absolutely love every minute of it.  We hope you’ll be a part of the adventure.

Steven Le Say – Co-Founder, Chief Maker of Stuff and Fountain of Knowledge

Steve has a somewhat diverse background.  He was a successful jeweler for many years, before drastically changing direction in 2005 to become a gardener and tree surgeon and began to pursue his love for The Great Outdoors.  An obsession with wood was born and, combined with a childhood passion for all things Native American, he began replicating many of the crafts and artifacts in books that his mum had passed onto him as a child.  Eventually, gardening by day and creating lovely things by night, Steve & wife Kirsty decided to follow their dream and start Axe & Paddle Bushcraft.  The name came from Steve’s favourite tool (an Axe) and the first thing he made with it (a Paddle).

Kirsty Le Say – Co-Founder, The Guvnor and Master of all Things Organised

Kirsty has led a more corporate career path, but studied in a creative field.  This has given her the business brain to get Axe & Paddle Bushcraft from a hobby to where it is now, as well as the artistic eye to help design the products, present the brand and envisage the next 3 years – and beyond!  Kirsty designs, makes a few things for our festival shop, looks after all social media, bookings and communications and keeps Steve in check!  No mean feat!
